Combined effect of cowdung and poultry dropping on the growth performance of major carps

After preliminary preparations, all the ponds were stocked with 15 Catla catla, 20 Labeo rohita, and 15 Cirrhinus mrigala. Ponds designated as control, T1, T2 and T3. The treated ponds were fertilized T1 with cow dung at the rate of 10 kg/pond/ day, T2 with poultry droppings at the rate of l0 kg/ pond/day and T3 with cowdung and poultry droppings at the rate of 10 kg/pond/day (5+5 kg). Cultured fish stocked, from the control and treated ponds were sampled fortnightly to monitor the growth performance. Water samples were taken (from all the ponds i.e. control and T1, T2 and T3) on fortnightly basis and were computed for the physicochemical characteristics viz., water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, carbonates, bicarbonates, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, total solids, total dissolved solids and planktonic biomass. In the control pond the initial and final average body weights of Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala were 137.4-220.3, 125.4- 224.2 and 122.7-224:38. In treated, pond -1 the initial and final average body weights (if three fish species were 138.8- 357.6,.168.6-386.9 and 125.6-370.58 respectively. The initial and final average- body weights of Catla catla, Labeo rohita, and Cirrhinus mrigala in treated pond -2 were 133.2-330.7, 158.6-434.6 and 128.1-382.9 g respectively while in treated pond -3 the readings were 132.6- 348.8, 131 1472.2 and 126.5-331.3 g respectively. The response of treatments toward increase in fish weight and total length was significantly different. Three fish species performed differently, in the three treatments for their growth parameters viz., body weight and total length. Supplementation oil treated ponds with organic manure (cowdung and poultry droppings) caused a marked increase in fish production. Net fish yield of all three fish species in control, T1, T2 and T3 ponds were 11.383, 27.170, 29.529 and 31.582 kg/pond/ year respectively. However the net fish production /ha/year were computed to be 569.16 kg, 1358.50 kg, 1476.267 kg and 1576.212 kg in control and treated ponds T1, T2 and T3 respectively. The treated pond-3 showed 2.7 times greater net fish production as compared to that of control pond and treated pond 2 and 1 showed 2.5 and 2.3 times greater net fish production as compared to that of control pond. There was an increase in planktonic biomass in pond water corresponding to the consequent decrease in temperature under the limited ranges. Planktonic biomass showed positive and highly significant correlation with dissolved oxygen in treated pond 3 (T3).
