Growth studies of major carps in poultry dropping fertilized ponds supplemented with corn gluten

The project was undertaken in two earthen ponds with the dimensions of 15m x 8m x 2m (length x width x depth) 0.012 hectare each. After routine preliminary preparations, each of these ponds was stocked with 66 fingerling major carps, viz. Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhina mrigala with the ratios of 30, 48 and 22 percent respectively. After stocking the both ponds, designated as treated and control, were fertilized separately with broiler droppings (based on its nitrogen contents) at the rate of 0.17 g nitrogen per 100 g net fish weight daily for a period of six months. However, the treated pond was supplemented with artificial feed of 30 percent corn gluten meal at the rate of 2.5 percent of the fish body weight daily from 16-06-2001 to 01-10-2001. The cultured fish stock was captured randomly at fortnightly basis to monitor increase in fish yield. After obtaining the data fish were released back into their respective ponds. Water temperature pH, light penetration, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, total alkalinity, total hardness and dry, weight of planktonic biomass in control and treated ponds were analyzed fortnightly. The results showed that the addition of feed in pond (treated) showed statistically significant effect on the performance of three fish species in terms of weight, fork length and total length gains. Among all the three fish species Cirrhina mrigala showed significantly better growth. Cirrhina mrigala in control while Catla catla in treated pond showed isometric growth patterns. The slope values in the regression equation computed for Labeo rohita in both control and treated ponds were higher than isometric growth value of 3. However, Catla catla in control pond had lesser value of "n" (2.472) than "3". The overall nitrogen conversion ratios in control pond was 2.88 while that in treated pond this was 2.25. There was non-significant difference between treatments for the conversion of nitrogen into fish weight. However, nitrogen conversion ratios fluctuated significantly with season. Feed supplementation (30 percent crude protein) in treated pond exerted significant effect on fish yield increments. The net fish yields of all the three fish species, in control and treated ponds were 603.4490 and 855.3178 kg/acre/6 months respectively. Planktonic productivity showed positively significant dependence on temperature water in both treated and control ponds. In control pond, planktonic productivity showed significant relationship with pH and total hardness also. Regression coefficients for both these parameters were negatively significant.
