Susceptibility of grooved shell clam, Ruditapes decussatus (mollusca, bivalvia) and Portuguese oysters, Crassostrea angulata, to infection by protozoan parasite, Perkinsus atlanticus (apicomplexa, perkinsea)

The capacity of Perkinsus atlanticus to induce infection in Crassostrea angulata was assessed by exposing the oysters to parasite zoospores. No oysters became infected during the experiment. The susceptibility of Ruditapes decussatus, with different sizes, to that pathogen was also tested using the same method. In spite of the low levels if infection observed, the biggest clams appeared to be more susceptible to the parasite. Gills seem to be the entrance door of their infecting forms
