Political considerations concerning food risk analysis
2002
Soares, M.C.
The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis and the dioxin scandal served to fracture public confidence in the safety in the cucle of food production. A new European Union's food policy was proposed in order to restore consumer confidence. This paper is intended to discuss European and United States food safety systems. The scientific and the political aspects of risk analysis are not clearly separated within the EU system. In addition, there is an increasing tendency to apply the precautionary principle, so that the trend towards the politicisation of science is observed. Characteristics of the U.S. food safety system are the separation of powers and science-based decision-making. As a result, the U.S. system has high levels of public confidence
