Predictors of cpue [catch per unit of effort] and standardization of fishing effort for the coastal seine fleet
2002
Parente, J.
For a given fishing fleet, the knowledge of the characteristic parameters which are best correlated with the catch per unit of effort (cpue), is essential for the quantification of fishing power and fishing effort. Considering the universe of 128 active vessels of the coastal seine fleet, a multiple linear regression was made between the cpue and a set of variables such as the year of construction, gross registered tonnage, engine power, pepth, length overall and beam. Some conclusions were achieved, namely that the gross registered tonnage and depth are the significant predictors od cpue, probably because of the relationship that these parameters have with the seine net dimensions. The determination of the fishing power based on the principle component analysis of six characteristic parameters of all active vessels composing the coastal seine fleet in 1997, has the advantage of avoiding fishing power being predicted by just one parameter, thus taking into account the effect of all the measured characteristics. Through this method it was possible to derive the standard fishing power and standard fishing effort of each vessel of the fleet
