Using a decision support system for selecting the most effective slope erosion prevention technique [Portugal]
2002
Gamito, P.
Erosion on hillslopes is the origin of several problems such as property loss, aquifer contamination and landscape degradation. Numerous slope stabilisation techniques can be used to minimise and prevent these problems. Among them, soil bioengineering techniques are the ones that are more cost efficient and that present a more environmental soundness use. Due to a variety of reasons (climatic factors, soils, vegetation, techniques properties, among others) the process of selecting the most appropriate soil bioengineering tecnique is still difficult. In order to increase the efficiency of this process this paper presents a decision support system that was developed using several databases with information relevant for the decision-making process, models for assessing erosion and landsliding risks, and virtual three-dimensional soil bioengineering techniques. All these features enable the simulation of different possible solutions in a virtual environment
