The aim of this study was to evaluate the control of Botrytis cinerea on the grapes, residue of fungicides and its incidence on the wine quality in the Region of "Vinhos Verdes". Results of field trials (1992-1997) on the efficacy evaluation of fungicides to control Botrytis cinerea in vineyards in the Region of "Vinhos Verdes" are presented. The effect of benomyl, dichlofluanid, vinclozolin, iprodione and procymidone (1992-1994) and the use of the alternation of active ingredients (procymidone, carbendazim+diethofencarb, pyrimethanil, cyprodinil+fludioxonil) according to the "standard method" (1995) or varying the number of treatments included in this method (1996 and 1997) were studied. The eventual toxicity of the fungicides and effects on the fermentation and wine characteristics were also studied with the determination of fungicide residues, chemical parameters (alcohol, acidity, tartaric and malic acid, pH, free and total sulphurous anhydrid, total dry extract and reducing sugars and non reducing extract) and other parameters (aspect, colour, foam, flavour, taste and appreciation) on grapes, wine and other fermentation products
