Seed morphometric, germination and biochemical characteristics of three subspecies of Acacia nilotica (L.) willd

This study was carried out to assess the level of variability in fruit and seed characteristics, seed germination and biochemical attributes of fruits of three subspecies of Acacia nilotica; namely, adansonii, nilotica and tomentosa. The seeds of subspecies adansonii were collected from North Kordofan State, nilotica from the White Nile State and tomentosa from the Blue Nile State. The seed germination trial was conducted at the National Tree Seed Centre laboratory, Soba; and the chemical analysis of the fruits was carried out at the laboratory of the Animal Production Research Centre, Helt Kuku, Khartoum north. The results revealed the existence of significant (P0.05) differences among the three subspecies in most of the studied parameters. The subspecies adansonii had the longest and broadest pods and the highest seed length, width, thickness and weight followed by nilotica then tomentosa. The highest germination percentage was shown by subspecies tomentosa had the highest percentage of crude protein in the whole seed and seed cotyledon, while subspecies adansonii had the highest percentage of protein in the seed coat. Subspecies adansonii pods had the highest percentage of crude fiber and ash content. The chemical variations in the pods and seeds were attributed to differences in climatic and edaphic conditions of the seed sources. These variations are discussed in terms of selection of the most suitable genotypes for plantation establishment in different geoclimatic zones
