Effects of troposphere ozone on wayfaring tree (Viburnum lantana L.)

The aim of this study was to use the native Viburnum lantana L. as an ozone bioindicator. This shrub was chosen due to its wide distribution in Slovenia and the fact that it has been already used for troposphere ozone monitoring in Switzerland. Nine populations of Viburnum lantana were randomly collected in Slovenia and planted at Iskrba by Kocevska Reka (rural site) and Ljubljana (urban site). Foliar injuries were monitored and recorded during three vegetation periods. The plants were also tested for biochemical response to ozone by analyzing photosynthetic pigments and ascorbic acid. Typical ozone injuries did not appear on Viburnum lantana leaves at the experimental sites. Nevertheless, in the year 2000 we found a Viburnum lantana plant about 10 km north from Iskrba, which showed typical ozone injuries. We presume that the plant is an ozone sensitive genotype. Analyses of photosynthetic pigments and ascorbic acid showed more pronounced "oxidative stress" at the Iskrba site. It was manifested by increase of ascorbic acid and photosynthetic pigments, especially carotenoids of xanthophyll cycle and beta carotene.
