Hydrodynamic resistance of trawl nets in the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia

Study on the efficiency of commercial trawl nets with respect to hydrodynamic resistance was conducted in the East Coast Peninsular Malaysia. Three samples of commercially operated trawl nets were taken from each state of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. The hydrodynamic resistance of the nets were estimated theoretically from the net plans. The resistance of each net was then correlated with the common structural characteristics of the net to determine the structural characteristics that have strong correlation with the resistance. It was found that only the maximum circumference of the nets has strong correlation with the resistance. The result of this study could be used as guidelines for construction of resistance efficient trawl nets.
