Effect of urea of the quality of sugarcane top silage

Experiment was conducted to determine the effect of urea application on the quality of sugarcane top silage. The fresh sugarcane tops were chopped (approximately 2 in. long), ensiled with 4 levels of urea; 0, 0,3, 0.6, and 0.9 percent of fresh weight, and placed in plastic bags for 45 days. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with 2 replications. The results showed that the untreated silages produced better quality in terms of pH, flavor, and color than the urea addition. The greater amount of urea resulted greater pH value and ammonia-nitrogen (P0.05). Addition of 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 percent of urea increased pH value of sugarcane top silage from 4.60 to 5.42, 6.95, and 7.13, and ammonia-nitrogen from 0.19 to 1.69, 3.85, and 4.20 g/1,000 g of silage, respectively. Crude protein, ash, NDF, and ADF contents did not change significantly but crude protein content tended to increase and ADF content tended to decrease as the urea levels increased. Only addition of 0.9 percent urea increased (P0.05) ruminal dry matter degradability of silage, measured by nylon bag technique, at 8, 24 and 48 hr in rumen.
