EEZ fishery management before and after Rio and prospects for regional cooperation in Southeast Asia

State of fishery resources and fisheries in Southeast Asian region from 1960-1991 was reviewed. Government policies and strategies for fisheries development and management prior to and after UNCED were discussed as well as mechanisms forsolving major regional issues with a view to accelerating the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture development in the Southeast Asia countries. The need for effective fisheries management in order to ensure the sustainability of fisheries of the region was also emphasized. As a framework for fishery cooperation is already in existence in the region, the author stressed the need for serious and solid cooperation in fisheries research and investigation, particularly in the South China Sea basin, and in the effective management of shared and straddlingfish stocks. If promises to cooperate and not followed by concrete actions. The forecast is that there will be no sustainability of fisheries of fisheries in the southeast Asian region.
