Influence of soil and herbicides on weed control in soybean (Glycine max)

Experiment was conducted at Khon Kaen University from December, 1990 to March, 1991 to evaluate the efficacy of some herbicides in soybean var.SJ 4 under three soil moisture levels using line-source sprinkler system. Alachlor, imazethapyr, and oxyfluorfen pre-emergently applied at 2.0, 0.125, and 0.125 kg ai/ha, respectively, and a mixture of fluazifop-butyl and fomesafen at 0.25+0.25 kg ai/ha applied 3 weeks after seeding were compared. The results revealed that all herbicides gave good weed control comparable to hand weeding in all soil moisture levels. The decrease in soil moisture levels had no effect on dry matter of grass and broadleaved weeds but significantly reduced seed and dry matter yields of soybean. However, all methods of weed control in soybean gave higher seed yields compared with no-weeding check. Weeds in no-weeding plots at optimal soil moisture level caused 44 percent yield reduction, and at 2/3 and 1/3 optimal soil moisture levels the yield reduction increased to 58 and 75 percent, respectively, compared with hand-weeding plots.
