Consideration on the utilization of mangrove forest by sattellite imagery data
1997
Tookwinas, S. (Department of Fisheries, Bangkok (Thailand). Coastal Aquaculture Div.)
Shrimp farming has been blamed for mangrove forest destruction for a long time. This would cause the negative impact on the sustainable development for shrimp farming industry. However, in 1994 the sattellite imagery data (Landsat TM5. 1993) were used to inventory the coastal land use pattern. The results shown that only 17.46 percent of total mangrove forest was used for shrimp farms which could separate into conservation zone 1.20 percent, economic zone A 6.16 percent and economic zone B 10.10 percent. As economic zone B is unproductive and upland mangrove area which can be leased by private along the Cabinet Mangrove Forest Resolution on 15 December 1987. Therefore, it can be concluded that only 7.36 percent of total area of productive mangrove forest has been used for shrimp farm sites.
