Effects of nitrogen sources and concentrations on growth and beta-carotene production in Dunaliella salina

Three sources of nitrogen: potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride and urea, each with 3 different concentrations (0.14, 0.07 and 0.014 g-atom-N/L) were used for cultivation of Dunaliella salina. The experiments were performed in aerated flask under continuous light (10,000 luxs). Dunaliella grew well in all nitrogen sources. The maximum cells density were approximately 1.13x10*[5)-2.17x10*[5) cell/mL, while cell density in the medium without addition of nitrogen was only 3.8x10*[4) cell/mL. In the medium supplemented with high concentrations of urea, cells died after exceeding stationary growth phase. The highest algal Beta-carotene content (13.9 micro g/10*[6) cell) was obtained when the alga was grown in the medium without nitrogen supplementation. In urea supplemented media, algal Beta-carotene contents were higher than those in media supplemented with other nitrogen sources. There was no significant difference in chlorophyll contents among treatments.
