This is the first report on the successful of natural spawning and larval rearing of Barramundi cod grouper, Cromileptes altivelis in captivity. Wild-caught broodstock were spawned naturally in captivity at water temperatures of 26-28 deg C, with flow-through system where sea water exchange at a rate of 300 percent per day. Spontaneous spawning occurred successively 4-10 times a month from May-October 1996 and spawning mostly occurred during the new moon phase. The number of eggs collected, fertilization rate of floating eggs and hatching rate ranged from 0.4-4.2 million, 80-98 percent and 10.3-85.7 percent, respectively. The hatched larvae were reared in 10-cubic m rectangular cement tanks and fed initially on rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis SS type, followed by rotifer S type and finally by Artemia nauplii mixed with artificial diet. Larviculture trials to 50 days produced juveniles of 23.6-25.3 mm average total length, at a survival rate ranging from 2.63-5.13 percent. High mortality of the larvae occurred during the initial feeding 3-6 days, long spines stages 10-22 days and cannibalism 30 days after hatching. The results demonstrated the possibility of breeding Cromileptes altivelis under captive culture conditions. However, methods to improve the larval survival have to be persued further for commercial farming of this species.
