Generally, temperature is a major limiting factor of japonica rice cultivation in Thailand. Therefore the objective of the research is to study the growth and yield of japonica rice grown at different planting dates in Khon Kaen Province. A greenhouse experiment using Sasanichiki variety of japonica rice was conducted during 1995-96 at Khon Kaen Rice Research Station. The treatments consisting of 4 transplanting dates (15 October, 15 November, 15 December 1995, and 15 January 1996) were arranged in randomized complete block design with 4 replications. The result revealed the significance of temperature as indicated by grain yield in different planting dates. Japonica rice transplanted on 15 January gave the highest in grain yield, due to higher in leaf area index, total dry matter, filled spikelet per panicle, and 1,000-grain weight. The rice transplanted in December also produced high yield close to those planted in January.
