Effects of highly unsaturated fatty acids on growth and stress resistance of Penaeus monodon post-larvae

Eighteen days post-larvae (PL-18) of Penaeus monodon were reared for 30 days with artificial diets containing different ratios of corn and tuna fish oils. The highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) contents of these diets ranged from 7.4 mg/g to 18.3 mg/g dry weight. Growth was significantly highest in shrimps fed an equal ration of corn oil and fish oil (HUFA=14.0 mg/g). The stress test at day 30 by abruptly transfering shrimps from 30 ppt to freshwater showed that shrimps fed higher ration of fish oil could withstand the stress better than those fed lower fish oil diets.
