Effect of land use and land cover changes to physical water qualities in streamflow of representative watersheds: Case study at Maetaeng, Choen and Klongyan watersheds

Impact of Changes in Land Use and Land Cover on physical water qualities in 3 representative watersheds (Maetaeng, Choen and Klongyan) were conducted by collecting streamwater in the river and the outlet 3 times a year in summer, rainny and winter from March 1995-December 1995. The watershed in North of Thailand was represented by Maetaeng Watershed. The major land use showed existing shifting cultivation on highland and headwater sources. The watershed in Northeast of Thailand was represented by Choen Watershed. The major land use showed permanent agricultural pattern and human settlement on headwater sources. The Klongyan Watershed representation of South showed the major land use was destroyed some conservation forest area for planting rubber plantation as the economic vegetation on headwater sources. All three watersheds were divided by land use and land cover. The water samples were analyzed to physical water qualities which were colour, turbidity, temperature, electrical conductivity and total solids of all three representative watersheds. The temperature and electrical conductivity were analyzed in the field. The colour, turbidity and total solids were analyzed in laboratory of San. E 68 Consulting Engineers company Limited. The physical water qualities of all three representative watersheds were not greater than the maximum standard of natural water quality in Thailand. (10-15 units, 25-75 JTU, 20-35 deg C, 150-300 micro mhos/cm and 100-500 mg/l respectively). The physical water qualities of Klongyan Watershed were classified as the best followed by Maetaeng Watershed and Choen Watershed respectively. The physical water qualities would be changed due to human activities in Watershed.
