Survey on constraints of groundnut production in the rainy season

Constrains of groundnut production in the rainy season were surveyed in 4 provinces of the Northeast in 1991. In Amphur Lahansai, Burirum, the productivity is reasonably high with average yields of 150-330 kg/rai. In Sahasakan, Kalasin the yields are quite low ranging from 76.8-252 kg/rai. The low soil fertility and excessive soil moisture observed are identified as constraints to the groundnut production in the area. Worse productivity, however, was observed in Kushinarayana in which 30-90 kg/rai were the average yield estimated. The soil in this area is sandy and very low in fertility. In Kasetsomboon, Chyapum, the soil fertility is considerably high. The yields of 123-264 kg/rai were estimated in plots without any inputs. In Phu Rua, Loie where groundnut is grown in rotation with corn, the crop can utilize the residual fertilizers carried over from the preceeding corn. As a result, the average yields in this area are quite high ranging from 120-400 kg/rai. The major constraint in this area is shortage of labour to do the stripping after the harvest. Prolonging this process can encourage Aspergillus colonization on the damped pods and aflatoxin production in the kernels.
