Effect of fertilizer rate and plant number per hill on growth and yield of soybean grown after rice in the post-monsoon season of northeastern Thailand

Experiment was conducted in a farmer's field in Ban Fang District, Khon Kaen Province in 1998-1999. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of 15-15-15 fertilizer (at rates of 0, 94 and 188 kg/ha, and plant number (1, 2 and 3 plants per hill) on growth and yield of soybean grown after rice in the post-monsoon season of Northeastern Thailand. The results showed that soybean that received fertilizer at the rate of 188 kg/ha gave the highest leaf area per plant, total top dry weight, main root length, root dry weight, pod number per plant, seed number per pod and seed yield. Soybean sown at 1 plant per hill gave the maximum leaf area per plant, total top dry weight, pod number per plant and seed number per pod. The maximum seed yield per area was obtained at 3 plants per hill. In economic terms, the application of 15-15-15 fertilizer at 188 kg/ha and planting at 3 plants per hill gave the highest net return of soybean planting after rice in the post monsoon season.
