Enzyme supplementation and the use of gelatinized starch in calves ration

Twenty heads of seven days old Holstein-Friesian crossbred were used in the 182 day experiment period and were randomly divided into 5 groups; whereas a Completely Randomized Design was employed to compare the influences among treatment means. All the animals were liberally received roughage (para grass in a preweaning and ruzi grass in a post-weaning period) and each group was randomly received one of the following five treatments which were: concentrate ration (in dry matter at 1.25 percent body weight), concentrate with corn meal as energy source, concentrate with corn meal as energy source + 0.1 percent enzyme, concentrate with broken rice as energy source, concentrate with broken rice as energy source + 0.1 percent enzyme, and concentrate with gelatinized starch as energy source, respectively. The results revealed that growth performance of animals were similar in those fed either concentrate ration with broken rice as energy source (both with and without enzyme supplementation) or the ration with gelatinized starch as energy source. Average daily gain, feed per 1 kg gain and feed cost per 1 kg gain were significantly higher than those fed corn meal in concentrate rations. However, the significant effect of broken rice (both with and without enzyme supplementation) and gelatinized starch as energy source in concentrate rations was found only in the pre-weaning but not in the latter period.
