Genetic variation study based on allozyme electrophoresis was carried out in three genetically improved strains (Chitralada 1, 2 and 3) of Oreochromis niloticus in Thailand. The study aimed to obtain genetic information to be utilized in the efficient management and maintenance of the three strains genetic resources. Genetic variation quantity (per locus average of heterozygosity) of the three strains were observably and expectedly estimated as H sub(o) = 0.067-0.084 and H sub(e) = 0.068-0.077, which were about the same level as exist in wild populations. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test showed valid representation of the fish samples as being from single panmictic populations which were not yet subdivided. However, some contamination or mixing of different populations may have occurred. Comparison of H sub(o) among the three strains overall polymorphic loci did not show any significant difference either between strains of the brood and progeny stocks or between brood and progeny stocks of each strain. It is concluded that all three strains have the same potential for aquaculture, regarding their aquacultural performances and genetic variation quantities.
