Biodiversity of aquatic plants at Ban-pong forest, Chiangmai, from October 2000 to May 2001

In phase 1, a survey of aquatic plants at Ban Pong forest was conducted from October 2000 to May 2001. The survey area covered a wetland of "Pong Lom" at 400 m MSL (4 rais or 6,400 square m in area) to "Huey Maprang" stream at 655 m MSL (1.25 kilometers in length). The Pong Lom has been described as undisturbed parts of the wetland area, is found to have a mixture of primary evergreen, shrubbery and climbing plants. The huey Maprang, on the other hand, has a flow of water throughout the year and is able to be described as the evergreen area. Data of all species of aquatic plants found in the area were collected twice per month. After the specimens were gathered, they were identified, the number together with their distribution were recorded and their preservation were kept at the Department of Fisheries Technology, Maejo University. It was found from the survey that there were 23 aquatic plant species comprising of 13 families and 14 genera; whereas the other 7 species were unable to identified. The highest number of aquatic plants found in the Pong Lom was a marginal group, mainly Araceae (elephant ear, Colocasia antiquorum Schott) and abundance species found at the Huey Maprang were Commelinaceae (dayflower, Commelina benghalensis L.) and Araceae (Lasia spinosa (L.) Thw.), respectively.
