Role and distribution of the dominant benthic fauna, Apseudes sapensis chilton 1926 (Crustacea : Tanaidacea) in Songkhla Lake, southern Thailand

Study of abundance and distribution of Apseudes sapensis Chilton 1926 in Songkhla Lake was carried out from 1991-1999. It was found that A. sapensis was distributed widely from the mouth of Songkhla Lake to the top part of the Inner Songkhla Lake. The highest abundance was in the Inner Songkhla Lake (0-5,044 individual/square m), second highest was in the mouth of Songkhla Lake (0-15 individual/square m), and it was not found in Thale Noi, the uppermost part of Songkhla Lake. The distribution and number of A. sapensis tended to be highest in the low salinity season. Although it could tolerate a wide range of water salinity, it was not found in high numbers in the stable high salinity and freshwater areas. In February, A. sapensis was the dominant diet found in the stomach contents of two common sea catfish species in the lake, Arius maculatus (65.2 percent; 4.5+-0.5 piece/fish) and A. sagor (50.6 percent; 4.0+-0.9 piece/fish). This indicated that A. sapensis plays a significant role in the food chain for demersal fish in Songkhla Lake.
