Efficient synthesis of gentisylquinonyl-2,6-dimethoxybenzoate (1), a quinone-ester isolated previously from Molineria latifolia Herb., has been achieved using either a coupling reaction of 2,6-dimethoxybenzoic acid (2) with hydroxymethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (3) or a coupling reaction of the acid (2) with 2,5-dihydroxybenzyl alcohol (4) and subsequent oxidation with sodium metaperiodate.
