Effects of waterlogging on growth and yield of groundnut

Pot experiment was conducted to study the response of four recommended varieties of groundnut, namely Tainan 9, SK 38, Lampang and Khon Kaen 60-1 (Moket) to waterlogging. Waterlogging was found to adversely affect pod yield, yield components and other characters of groundnut. The effect of waterlogging on most characters including pod yield of all varieties was visible within two days after exposure to flooding. In terms of pod yield and seed size, Khon Kaen 60-1 tended to be more tolerant to waterlogging than Tainan 9. For all varieties, it was observed that, as the crop grew older, it became more susceptible to waterlogging. The adverse response of the legume to waterlogging was proposed to be due to the reduction of oxygen around the root zone as well as the reduction in nodulation and nutrient uptake.
