Initial evaluation of coconut genebank in Vietnam

Coconut is the major perennial oil crop to be planted popularly in Vietnam with the extent of about 250,000 ha, concentrated mainly in Mekong Delta of the South and along the coastal regions of the Central. Total of 41 coconut accessions were collected and conserved in the field genebank in Dong Go Experimental Center (DGEC), Ben Tre province. Results of cluster analysis have showed clearly that there are two different groups of coconut in the geenebank: Tall group includes coconut varieties with allogamy in reproduction habit, well growth and development, less number of nuts per bunch but big nuts, high oil content, well adapted to varied ecological conditions. Dwarf group includes conconut varieties with autogamy in reproduction, slow in growth and development, many nuts per bunch but small nuts, low oil content, not suitable for copra production. These results are very useful to identify the direction of coconut breeding programme with the aim to produce high -yielding hybrid coconut varieties to serve for coconut development project for the period of 2001-2005 which funded by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
