Infiltration characteristics, irrigation advance pattern and design of optimum length for furrow irrigation with manual pumps in a silty loam soil

Infiltrability was studied in a silty loam soil having bulk density of 1.4 g/ml. A number of furrows were applied in, with different stream sizes obtained from 1.5" (3.8 cm) tubewell operated by three manual pumps viz, No.6 Hand pump, Rower pump and Treadle pump. Irrigation advance patterns were found out. The infiltration equations for the soil were found to be i) Y=34.48 t sub (0.167)-34, and ii) Y-2.156 t sub (0.7)+10.68 for an average initial moisture of 26.23 percent and 14.1 percent respectively over a depth of 60 cm. A procedure is suggested to find out the optimum furrow length for certain discharge to be irrigated at certain moisture content of the soil. The optimum furrow length varied from 25 m to 60 m for a desired irrigation depth varying from 17 m to 60 m forr a desired irrigation depth varying from 6 cm to 9.4 cm for a constant discharge of 847.4 ml/min/cm of width (42.37 ltpm/50 cm spaced furrow). For a discharge of 1,228.8 ml/min/cm of furrow). For a discharge of 1,228.8 ml/min.cm of furrow width (61.44 ltpm/50 cm spaced furrow), the optimum length varied from 6 cm to 7.8 cm. In both cases, the ratio between time of advance to reach furrow end and total time of irrigation was assumed to be 1:2.
