Effect of urea on the quality of sugarcane top silage

Experiment was conducted to determine the effect of urea on the quality of sugarcane top silage. The fresh sugarcane top was chopped to approximately 2 inches length and ensiled with 4 levels of urea (0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 percent of fresh weight) in plastic silo, 10 kg each. After 45 days of ensiling, the silage was sampling and determined the quality. The experimental design was CRD with 2 replications. Adding urea 0 percent produced good quality of silage in acidity, flavor and color. The greater amount of adding urea, the greater in increasing in pH and ammonia-nitrogen. the pH of sugarcane top silage was increased (p0.05) from 4.60 to 5.42, 6.95 and 7.13 and ammonia-nitrogen from 0.19 to 1.69, 3.85 and 4.20 g/1000 g silage when 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 percent of urea were added, respectively. Adding urea did not significantly change in crude protein content, but the values trended to increase as the urea levels increased i.e. from 7.08 percent to 8.25, 9.15 and 10.57 at the level of 0 to 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 percent urea, respectively. The ADF values of the silage also trended to slightly decrease as the urea levels increased. Adding 0.9 percent urea was found to increase (p0.05) the ruminal dry matter degradability (DMD) of the silage (at 8, 24 and 48 hr in rumen) measured by nylon bag technique, while the DMD of th 0 to 0.6 percent urea silage were not singificantly increased.
