Two kinds of sesame meal (SSM), i.e. local produced and imported (cv. white seed) which contained 28.2 vs 41.4 percent crude protein (CP, 32.9 vs 6.5 percent ether extract, 9.5 vs 12.6 percent crude fiber (air dry basis) were used to substitute 0, 50, 75 and 100 percent soybean meal (SBM) in poultry diets which had 21, 19 and 17 percent CP for chicks during 1-3, 3-6 and 6-7 weeks of age, respectively. Eight hundred and forty heads of 7-day old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 7 treatments, each with 4 replicates and raised in a floor pen. It was found that the performances of the birds decreased with the increasing level of SSM. The quality of imported SSM was superior to the local product and could be substitute of 75 percent of SBM without adverse effect. The substitution of SBM by local SSM at 50 percent caused lower weight gain although feed conversion ratio was comparable to the control group. No significant differences were found among groups on carcass quality with the exception of abdominal plus visceral fat content which was higher in the groups fed local SSM.
