Effects on rumen fermentation and blood of total mixed ration in steers

Steers were fed by 1) paragrass hay concentrate 2) cubed leucaena-straw and concentrate and 3) TMR (total mixed ration). 3*3 Latin square, three fistutated steers of 310 kg by average were employed. Rumen liquor was collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 h and blood was taken at 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h after meal. Dry matter intake, ruminal pH, NH3-N, acetic, propionic, butyric acid and protein nitrogen were similar (p0.05). The pH was lowest and NH3-N was highest at 4 h after feeding while VFA and protein nitrogen were peaked at 3 and 8 h postfeeding. Blood urea was significantly different between treatments at 1 h after meal (p0.05) and peaked at 4 postfeeding and blood glucose was similar (P0.05) and was high at 12 h postfeeding.
