Comparative studies on the anthelmintic effiicacy of nitroscanate mebendazole and a combination of pyrantel, febantel and praziquantel against hookworms and ascarid in puppies

Sixty mongrel puppies of both sexes, aged less than 3 months, from the Rabies Control Center were used in this study. Hookworms and ascarids were acquired naturally and used to infect the animals. They were divided into four groups of 15 each. Group I consisted of untreated controls. Group 2 were orally treated with introscanate tablets with a single treatment of 50 mg/kg bodyweight. Group 3 were orally treated with mebendazole tablets at a dosage of 22 mg/kg for 5 consecutive days. Group 4 were orally treated with a combination of 144 mg pyrantel, 150 mg febantel and 50 mg praziquantel (PFP) tablets at a single dosage of one tablet per 10 kg bodyweight. Faecal samples were collected before and after treatment and examined for egg count per gram of faeces by means of the Mc Master Chamber Technique. Worms passed in the faeces were examined and count over 7 consecutive days. At the end of the experiments, all dogs were necropsied and examined for any remaining gastrointestinal helminths. Both critical and controlled tests were used to cvaluate the efficacy of these 3 anthelmintics. Similar, satisfactory results were obtained from all tests. Mebendazole and PFP were highly effective against hook worms (Ancylostoma spp.) and Toxocara canis at 97.45-100 percent whereas nitroscanate was highly effective (95.13-100 percent) against Hookworms but moderately effective (81.90-85.29 percent) against the ascarids.
