Effect of planting distances on growth and seed yield of two castor bean varieties

Castor bean experiment was carried out during the middle of August to December 1992 to investigate the effect due to planting distances upon growth and seed yields of castor bean varieties H 22 and KKC 36. The experiment was laid out in a 2*3 factorial arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. The distances used between rows and within the row were: 40*40, 50*50, and 60*60 cm. The results showed that an increase in the value of planting distances increased total top dry weights per plant of both varieties. The H 22 variety gave slightly greater total top dry weights, leaf areas and leaf dry weights per plant than that of the KKC 36. An increase in the distances used increased leaf areas and leaf dry weights per plant of both varieties yet leaf areas were smaller for the KKC 36 than that of the H22 variety. The stem plus petioles dry weights of the H 22 was not affected by the distances used but was with the KKC 36 variety. Cluster dry weights of the H 22 were similar in all distances used while that of the KKC 36 increased with an increase in the distances used. An increase in the distances increased the length of individual clusters and seed yields per plant of both varieties. However, seed yields per hectare of both varieties increased with the decrease in the planting distances. The highest seed yields were 3,025 and 3,143 kg/ha for the KKC 36 and the H 22, respectively. Leaf area index (L) of the H 22 was greater than that of the KKC 36 and L values were ranging from 4 to 11 for KKC 36 and H 22, respectively.
