Comparative study of serum specific gI antibody titre response in pigs following MLV-Aujeszky's IN and IM vaccination

Sixty weaned piglets were divided into three groups of twenty. The first group were non vaccinated controls. The second group were intranasally vaccinated with NIA 3-783 strain of Aujeszky's disease vaccine at 6 and 8 weeks of age. the third group was intramuscularly vaccinated twice with the same strain. Specific gI antibody level were examined from sera collected at 4, 8, 16 and 28 weeks of age. there was a reduction in the percentage of sixteen week old pigs in the second and the third group with positive specific gI antibody, with the second group showed 0 percent positive and the third group 10 percent. At 28 weeks of age, the percentage of pigs with positive specific gI antibody increased, with 70 and 30 percent positive in the second and the third groups, respectively. These results indicate that two intranasal and intramuscular vaccinations given at 6 and 8 weeks of age in pigs with a high prevalence of aujeszky's disease did not reduce the precentage of gI antibody positive pigs and vaccinated pigs still became infected at 28 weeks of age.
