The ecological compensation areas (ECA) aim to preserve or re-create semi-natural environments and also to support faunistic diversity. This last objective is evaluated through the study of different taxonomic groups, particularly spiders, known to be excellent indicators in environment quality. For the moment, the ecological quality of studied sites reaches a rather weak score and extensively used meadows still differ very little from high intensively exploited meadows. However, the hedgerows are identified as valuable sites and high-grown fruit trees in traditional orchards are also classed as interesting environments. From 1999 to 2001, a general improvement was noticed in the arachnological quality, while the number of species per station also increased. These two elements indicate a positive evolution of the region after the introduction of ECA. During the next survey campaign, these tendencies and the exact effect of ECA on biodiversity should be precised.
