European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) - a pest of pepper

The European Corn Borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) has been gaining increasing importance as a pest of pepper fruits in recent years. Qualitative and quantitative damage it causes may be great and highly important in economic terms. Often, up to 50 or more of the fruits suffer damage. The damage is greater in pepper varieties that are sweeter and have larger fruits. The bulk of plant injury is caused by the caterpillars of the second generation in the second half of summer. The incidence of this pest can be reduced by the destruction and deep plowing under of maize harvest residues used by the caterpillars for overwintering. To the same end, pepper should not be grown after maize and spacial isolation should be as large as possible. The European Corn Borer can be controlled by using parasidoids (Trichogramma evanescens), bioinsecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis, kurstaki strain (preparation Biobit WP), and conventional pyrethroid insecticides (Talstar 10 EC, Decis EC-2,5 and others). The insecticide treatments should be carried out seven to ten days after the start of flight of the second-generation butterflies.
