Roles of interspecific hybridization and cytogenetic studies in sunflower breeding

This paper review the systematics and taxonomy of the genus Helianthus, its genomic structure and the usefulness of wild Helianthus species as a source of desirable genes. Cytogenetic studies on sunflower are reviewed through the analyses of chromosome number (karyotype), meiosis (micro- and macrosporogenesis), pollen viability and cytoplasmic male sterility.
