Development of marine fishing in Montenegro during the period between WW2 (World War Two) and 1990-ties was insignificant. However, since 1992/93 there is a rapid increase in number of ships, so in season 1997/98 there were 196 registered vessels intended to be used for professional or additional fishing. In last decade or so, there was a period of intensive extraction of trawling resources. There is no doubt that such an activity led to disturbance of natural state and decrease of fish population numbers in the sea. Catch calculated by one hour of trawling decreased from 60 to 20 kg/h. The estimated biomass was half of the similar estimate from 1973. In 1973 it was 3400 tons while now it is 1700 tons. These data were also used to estimate the biological Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) of these resources, which is 602 tons per year, and the optimal fishing effort of 1190 days per year. First echo-probing in 2002 was used to estimate the biomass of small blue fish to 136 119 tons, including 90 383 tons of anchovies, 30 760 tons of sardines and 14 970 tons of other pelagic species. The initial MSY is 30 910 tons of anchovies and 9 721 tons of sardines. Questionnaries given to fishermen and the rough statistics show that coastal fishing bring yearly yield of 1200 tons of quality species of fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Keeping score of catch in marine fishing is still one of the greatest problems in Montenegrin coast.
