Etiological studies of peach branches die-back in the Fruska Gora region [Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro]

Based upon accomplished isolations of pathogens from infected branches from the Fruska Gora region on nutritive media, as well as upon studies of pathogenic, morphological and cultural characteristics of the obtained isolates, it was determined that studied isolates belong to the species Cytospora cincta (teleomorph Leucostoma cinctumsyn. Valsa cincta) inducer of cancer injuries and fruit dying. With the aim of isolates pathogenicity testing, artificial inoculations of peach cuttings in botanical garden and inoculations of peach branches (two years age) in the field under cyclic diseases development over the year had been studied. In two years period inoculation trials were set up in the field have been on the monthly basis. Symptoms on inoculated branches suggest uneven parasites development during a year, for only those inoculations performed during autumn and winter months, i.e. during fruit rest period, cause die-back of inoculated branches, while infections carried out during spring and summer mainly remaine localized due to outgrowth of host's new tissue. Morphological characteristics were studied upon occurrence, way of forming and measurement of reproductive organs, i.e. pycnidia with pycnidiospores in vitro and in vivo conditions. Studies of cultural characteristics have included study of different nutrient solutions influences, various pH values and temperatures on colonies development and fructification of the studied isolates. Possibility of Cytospora cincta chemical control was studied in in vitro trials on potato media by use of different rates of preventive and systemic fungicides.
