The aim of the present study was to assess metal contamination in the same reaches of the river, and thus to help explain unsatisfactory reproduction results in the reproduction of salmonoid fish. The contamination assessment was based on measuring metal concentrations in the brown trout (Salmo trutta morpha fario) and some bottom sediment samples. The samples were collected in June 2000 and 2001 at two collection sites from the Ticha Orlice River (Cervena Voda and Lichkov) and its tributary Kralicky Brook (Czech Republic). The AAS method was used to determine the total Hg, As, Ca, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni concentrations in the muscle tissue of the fish and in aquatic sediments. There were differences in the measured concentrations of the pollutants studied between the sampling sites as well as the two years. Concerning the sediments, the highest values were found in the Kralicky brook as this brook is an important anthropogenic source of metal contamination for the Ticha Orlice river. Another trends were observed in fish muscles. The differences in metal concentrations between the sampling sites were less pronounced and some metals accumulated more in fish samples from Ticha Orlice river than in those from Kralicky brook. In most cases the concentrations of pollutants decreased from 2000 to 2001. The occurrence of heavy metals, especially Hg, may contribute to the bad reproductive health of fish.
