The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of different nutrition factors on the yield of sugar beet roots and on sugar concentration in the roots. The experiments were conducted from 1992 to 2002 in two regions (middle-eastern and central Poland). The plantations were divided into two groups, a group with root yields above the average (I) and a group with root yields below the average (II). The average root yield in the group I was 47.4 t/ha in middle-eastern Poland and 55.9 t/ha in central Poland, whereas in the group II it was 31.1 and 37.7 t/ha, respectively. The corresponding values for sugar content were as follows: 15.8% and 18.0% (group I), 15.8% and 16.9% (group II). The effect of nutrition depended on the yield. The major factors influencing sugar beet production were N and P fertilization in the group I, whereas it was soil pH and soil K content in the group II.
