Ultrastructural changes of ovaries in rabbits following cadmium administration

Rabbits received Cd either i.p. (1.5 mg/kg body weight, group A) or in pelleted food at a dose of 1.0 mg/kg b.m. for 5 month (group C). The K group was the control. Qualitative analyses showed numerous changes in the ultrastructure of ovarian cells after Cd administration. Significant decrease of relative volume of mitochondria in group C in comparison with group A was found in granulosa cells. In ovarian thecal cells a significant increase of the relative volume of endoplasmic reticulum in group A in comparison with K group was detected. In ovarian stromal cells a significant increase of the relative volume of smooth membranes was found. In endothelial cells significantly higher amount of mitochondria and cytoplasm in group A were observed. The negative effect of Cd was detected in all studied cell types and we conclude that it is cell-dependent.
