Forage characteristics of Vicia sativa L. and Trifolium resupinatum L. in catch crop systems under Central European conditions

Dry matter yield and quality of Vicia sativa were compared with those of Trifolium resupinatum. The suitability of V. sativa for cultivation in a mixture with Lolium multiflorum ssp. gaudinii was also tested. The legumes and mixtures were sowed in early July or August, respectively, and harvested at different dates from early September until late October/early November. The sowing date had the greatest impact on dry matter yield, crude protein concentration and net energy for lactation (NEL). V. sativa yielded more dry matter than T. resupinatum, especially at low temperatures and under short-day conditions. V. sativa should be preferred to T. resupinatum at late sowing because of better yield stability. V. sativa had a higher crude protein conc. but lower NEL values than T. resupinatum. Late sowed mixtures of V. sativa and L. multiflorum might enable feeding of fresh forage of good quality until early November.
