The alleviate feed shortage in north western Ethiopia, research has been carried out to develop appropriate food and forage crops-based cropping systems for sustainable crop/livestock production. The integration of food and forage crops revealed that there were no reduction on grain and biomass yield of food crops. Furthermore, the system significantly increased total fodder yield. The growth of forage legumes with food crops provides organic fertilizer and is environmentally sound and sustainable. Besides it increases the quality and digestibility of cereal residues. The future strategy should focus to assess the socio-economically acceptability and sustainability of the technologies.
