Integration of indigenous knowledge in to the institutional setup of Science and Technology Commission

Indigenous Knowledge (IK) provides the basis for problem-solving strategies for local communities and serves as a source of livelihood for millions of people in the developing world. One of the principal arguments for a closer working relationship between farmers and researchers is that it provides an opportunity for co-operation in the mobilisation of indigenous knowledge. In view of this, the National Science and Technology policy promotes improvement of traditional knowledge. Based on the policy document, the Ethiopian Science and technology Commission undertakes various activities towards the development, improvement, promotion, and protection of indigenous knowledge. The Commission supports IK-related research proposals in its local research grant scheme. It is also making efforts to develop Intellectual Property Right guidelines for various innovative types of IK-related work. Promotion of IK is being carried out by the Radio Programme in Science and Technology (RAPINSAT) in five local languages, prepared by the Commission in collaboration with Radio Ethiopia. The National Science and Technology Award honours those researchers who have made significant achievements in improving traditional technology. "Erf and Mofer" attached mould-board plough is one of the achievements awarded atthe first National Science and Technology Award Ceremony. Thus, it will not be long and far that the Commission designs a mechanism for honouring innovative farmers, which will have a significant impact on strengthening farmers' capacity to seek and try out new ideas so as to adjust to the changing conditions.
