Effects of neem seed extracts on insect pests of eggplant, okra and cowpea.

The efficacy of various neem formulations (neem emulsion, aqueous-methanol extract of defatted neem cake and defatted neem cake applied as a dust) against some major pests of aubergine, okra and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) was investigated in the field in Ghana. Various concentrations of neem emulsion reduced the incidence of the noctuid Selepa docilis, the tingid Urentius sp. and the acridid Zonocerus variegatus on aubergine; however some phytotoxicity was observed on plants treated with 10 or 20% emulsion at the pre-flowering stage but did not recur in the subsequent spraying sessions. Damage caused to okra by the pyralid Sylepta derogata [Syllepte derogata] and the chrysomelid Podagrica sjostedti [Nisotra sjostedti] was lower in plots treated with 5, 10 and 20% aqueous-methanol extracts of defatted neem cake. On cowpea, defatted neem cake applied as a dust not only reduced the incidence of the pyralid Maruca testulalis but also significantly increased pod yield.
