The author comments on experiments that were initiated by the Forest Products Research Institute in trying to find species that are not only fast growing but which would also grow in the Savanna areas of the country to providing the surrounding population with agricultural poles, fuelwood and timber. The trial programme included a list of valuable species growing in regions of the world having a climate similar to Ghana. After trials in tree nursery, those species, which showed promise, included Eucalyptus cadambae, Eucalyptu scitriodora, Eucalyptus tereticornis; Eucalptus alba and Gmelina arborea. These were transplanted as seedlings to experimental areas in Sege, Abofour and Yenku.
