Why seasoned timber?

Every freshly cut timber contains some water. During drying the quantity of free water gradually decreases until a stage is reached where the cell wall still saturated but the cell cavities are deviod of water. At this stage the moisture content of the wood is between 25% and 30%. Freshly cut timber may contain as much as three parts of water and one part of wood substance. The free water contained in timber is not difficult to dispel. Wood/water relationship is of prime importance in the wood working industry. The paper therefore seeks to discuss the importance of drying in wood working industry. The paper also discusses the various methods of wood drying in Ghana.
