Four collecting missions were undertaken during 1985-86 and samples were collected from 10 trees at each of 19 sites in the northern sector (comprising the upper east, upper west and northern regions) of Ghana. Seeds from half of each sample were germinated, planted in the field at the Cocoa Research Institute's substation in Bole, and after one year the plants were evaluated for height, girth, number of leaves and leaf area. The other half of each sample was evaluated for fruit and nut weight, fruit:nut ratio and percentage fat content. Establishment in the field of samples from all sites was good as indicated by high mean values for the growth parameters of one-year-old plants. The highest mean weight of fruit (30 g) and nuts (13.2 g) were obtained from samples collected at the Sumburungu and Ghani sites, respectively, in the upper east region, whilst the highest mean percentage fat content (62%) was observed for samples collected at the Kahifehiyili site in the northern region.
